Choosing the Right Dog Food to Avoid Obesity

Commercial dog food – both wet (canned) and dry – is the main component of the diet of most dogs. The dog food formulas that are easily available at pet supply stores make feeding your dog extremely easy and convenient. It means that all you need to do is scoop the food into your dog’s dish and you can go about your busy schedule without having to worry about all of the shopping and preparations necessary for meeting your pet’s nutritional needs. That said, feeding your dog a commercial food is usually a much more cost-effective option than making it at home. That said, you need to make sure that you choose the right food for your pet or you risk making your dog overweight.

Obesity is as serious a problem among dogs as it is among humans, and the problem is growing. Today, it is estimated that one in every five dogs is obese – among them, many have a chronic condition. Obesity can shorten the life of your dog, who is entirely dependent on you to resolve this health concern. There are two primary ways to beat obesity in a dog. The first is exercise and the second is food. Make sure that you are selecting the right dog food and using the proper amount when you are feeding your pet.

It may seem to make your dog happy when you heap your dog’s bowl full of food, or when you give your dog only wet food, but you may be doing much more harm than good. Over time, this becomes costly not only to your wallet, but also to your dog’s wellbeing. When it all comes down to it, if your dog is obese as a result of your habits in feeding it, then you are killing your animal.

Of course, feeding only starts with dog food. The next problem that many people have in causing their dogs to become obese is that they give their pets the right food in the right sized portions and then continually toss them treats and “people food” throughout the day. These foods are even higher in calories and lower in nutrition than the dog food and they can really pack on the pounds. When your dog is obese, you need to remind yourself of an important thing: treats are just that. They are to treat your dog, not to regularly feed your dog.
